How much protein do you actually need?

Put simply, individual protein needs differ from person to person. The ideal amount of protein needed daily is determined by your body mass, as well as your energy expenditure and level of physical activity. The estimated average requirement is 0.66kg / per kg body mass at a minimum, but the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is 0.8mg/kg. If you are wanting to increase muscle mass it is recommended to consume 1.2-1.7 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. Increasing your daily intake above your daily need will contribute to greater strength and muscle mass gains when combined with regular resistance training.

So for a 60kg female, they would need around 50g of protein a day to prevent deficiency. To build muscle mass, the goal would be to consume roughly 100g of protein per day.

What is the ideal time to consume protein?

After training is the ideal time to feed yourself the key nutrients you need to build and recover your muscles. That’s why protein shakes are a post-workout favourite, as they’re not only a great source of protein, but are also super convenient to consume and an easy way to reach your daily protein requirements.
